While the cruise industry is busy working out how and when to resume operations, Italian legislators are working to include ‘electrification of ports' in the list of investments financed by the EU Recovery Fund. It signifies bringing electrical power connections to the quayside to allow berthed vessels to switch off their generators and connect to the shore power grid (process Cold Ironing). This is a game-changer for the port's communities since it will finally eliminate local pollution caused by the emissions of vessels burning fossil fuels to generate electricity. Still, this electricity has to be produced, but large shore power plants are usually more efficient and feature better emission mitigation technologies. Why hasn’t been done yet? Because of the large costs of bringing the proper electrical infrastructure to the quayside, as well as the lower costs of producing electricity onboard by burning de-taxed fuel. The fact that vessels run on different standards of voltage and frequency has not helped either. Only the support of the state can help to overcome these barriers and build the required infrastructures. Many countries have already invested in Cold Ironing and many are making its use mandatory. Thus, we welcome Italy's decision to move in this valuable direction.

We need to be ambitious, and transform ports from strong energy consumers to smart energy hubs that produce and export green energy, while participating in the flexibility market through smart energy management of renewables, loads, batteries and hydrogen Enel X
